If you know me, you know I’ll take any chance I can to travel, no matter the month. But March is one of my favorite months to explore new places, and it’s no coincidence that over the past few years, it has also been one of the months we’ve traveled the most.

With longer days, more comfortable weather, and fewer crowds, many of the best places to travel in March feel calmer, more inviting, and easier to enjoy, especially if you’re searching for warm places to visit in March or destinations just beginning to bloom.

March falls right in the shoulder season, as winter fades and spring begins to arrive. It’s also the month when most people head out for spring break. It’s a month when you can wander cities without rushing, enjoy outdoor adventures without extreme heat, and experience destinations at a more authentic pace.

In this guide, I’m sharing some of the best places to visit in March. Whether you’re craving culture, food, nature, or sunshine, these destinations offer exceptional experiences.

March is a magical month to travel. The days are starting to warm up, spring is in the air in many parts of the world, and the crowds are usually smaller than during peak summer months. Whether you’re longing for turquoise waters, desert landscapes, or once-in-a-lifetime adventures, this guide will help you discover some of the best places to travel in March. From exotic escapes to sunlit coastlines, here’s where your March getaway should take you.

Wadi Rum in Jordan during March with mild weather and clear skies.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

If you want a place with incredible history, adventure, and scenery, Jordan in March is hard to beat. We spent three weeks there one March and can’t wait to return. Visiting was even better than I had imagined when I first learned about Petra as a kid.

March is a great time to visit because of the mild weather. Temperatures hit that sweet spot, making it comfortable to hike in the desert or explore historic ruins. There are also fewer crowds than in summer.

This year is also a particularly good time to visit Jordan, as travelers have been focusing on other destinations, and prices are not as competitive as they once were. Traveling to Jordan this March means better deals on hotels, guided tours, and excursions, allowing you to enjoy a luxury experience without paying peak-season prices and before its popularity surges again.

Some of our can’t-miss things to do in Jordan include seeing Petra for the first time, of course, and driving through the endless sand dunes of Wadi Rum. Camping under the stars in a Wadi Rum bubble tent is another bucket-list experience. To finish your trip, we recommend floating in the Dead Sea and enjoying the feeling of weightlessness in its salty, mineral-rich water.

If you’re looking for the best places to go in March, Jordan will leave you amazed, and you’ll create memories you’ll cherish for years.

Colorful streets of Cartagena, a must-visit destination in March

Cartagena, Colombia

Colombia is another great warm destination to visit in March, with a thriving culture and relaxing beaches. It truly feels like a dream spending a few sunny days strolling through the streets of Cartagena, which is well known for its colonial architecture, plazas, and local markets. If you’ve already visited Cartagena, head to Santa Marta, where the Caribbean coastline invites you to swim, snorkel, float, or simply relax under the sun.

You can also hike in nearby Tayrona National Park, wander through charming villages, or enjoy fresh seafood right by the ocean. Colombia is one of the best places to travel in March for nature lovers looking for incredible Caribbean experiences.

Turks and Caicos with turquoise waters one of the best warm places to visit in March

Grace Bay beach, Turks and Caicos

Sometimes, peak season doesn’t mean a bad time to travel. Visiting Turks and Caicos in March means more open restaurants, more activities, and plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers while snorkeling and diving. The island can get busy, but it never feels overcrowded, and there’s always space to enjoy the sun and sea.

Yes, it’s a more popular time, and prices are higher, but the turquoise waters and soft white-sand beaches make it worth every penny.

As someone who grew up swimming in warm, tropical waters, I can tell you firsthand that the beaches here are breathtaking, and the experiences you’ll have are the kind of memories you’ll carry home forever.

Among our top recommendations for things to do on the island are swimming at Grace Bay Beach, going on a sunset cruise, and snorkeling along the coral reefs, where coral gardens and schools of fish surround you in every direction.

Beyond the beach, don’t miss the weekly fish fry, a lively market where you can taste fresh-caught seafood, enjoy live music, and mingle with locals and visitors. It’s the perfect way to connect with the culture and flavors of the islands while enjoying a family-friendly evening under the stars.

Turks and Caicos is the ideal Caribbean getaway for early spring and easily one of the best places to travel in March.

Egypt with pleasant March weather

Egypt

March is a great time to visit Egypt, making it one of the top destinations for this month. You can avoid peak summer temperatures and enjoy much more comfortable sightseeing conditions. No trip to Egypt is complete without a stop in Cairo, where you can see the Pyramids of Giza, sail along the Nile River, and visit the newly renovated Egyptian Museum. We’ve been to Egypt before, but it’s back on our list now that the museum has reopened.

Beyond Cairo, you can discover ancient temples and tombs in Luxor and Alexandria that have stood for thousands of years, or go diving in the Red Sea in Sharm El Sheikh.

Check out our Egypt guide for the best things to do in March.

Seychelles

The only place on this list that we haven’t visited yet is the Seychelles, and you might wonder why I’m recommending it.

We had a trip planned for March 2020, but it was canceled just three days before we were supposed to leave. We still haven’t rebooked, but I shared my original itinerary with a friend who went recently, and she said it was even better than I imagined. Even though I haven’t been myself, I can confidently say the Seychelles is one of the best places to visit in March if you’re dreaming of a tropical escape.

The Seychelles has unspoiled beaches that feel untouched. The archipelago includes many islands, but Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue are the most popular. We suggest spending most of your time on La Digue.

La Digue beaches in the Seychelles during March

For a magical experience, rent a clear kayak to see tropical fish beneath the water, or bike around the island and stop for fresh coconut water when the sun gets warm. To experience local culture, take a cooking class to learn Seychellois dishes or explore small villages and markets to see daily island life.

The Seychelles is truly one of the best warm places to visit in March!

Lalibela, Ethiopia

For truly adventurous and experienced travelers looking for an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime journey, Ethiopia is one of the best places to visit in March. We went two years ago, and the country is a collage of spectacular landscapes, unique history, and culture.

The country is unique historically, having never been colonized by a European power, which gives it a distinct and authentic character you’ll feel everywhere you go.

Some of the most memorable things to do in Ethiopia include visiting the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, hiking through the dramatic Simien Mountains, learning about local traditions, and exploring busy markets.

If adventure calls, journey to the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on Earth, and witness a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. Along the way, you’ll meet local tribes, explore remote regions, and experience moments that can change the way you see the world.

To make the most of your trip, it’s essential to plan with a knowledgeable local guide. Local guides offer insight into each region, work closely with other local guides and community leaders, and help ensure you travel safely while gaining the deepest possible cultural understanding.

If you’re traveling with young children, Ethiopia might be better to visit when your kids are older, or consider going without them to fully enjoy the adventure.

Where to Travel in March for Spring Blooms and Unforgettable City Experiences

If you’re wondering where to travel in March, these destinations offer the perfect balance of history, culture, and travel experience, without the chaos of peak season.

From cherry blossoms in Japan to tulip fields in the Netherlands and idyllic streets in Southern Europe, these are some of the best places to travel in March if you love walkable cities, seasonal beauty, and memorable experiences.

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Japan during early March

Tokyo, Japan

Japan in March feels quietly magical. We were in Tokyo right at the beginning of cherry blossom season, and it was the perfect time to visit. The blooms had just started to appear, the crowds were still manageable, and the temperatures were ideal for exploring, cool enough to stay cozy, yet mild enough to wander for hours.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Japan if you want to see the famous cherry blossoms. You can stroll through parks dusted with pale pink blooms, explore quaint neighborhoods, and experience traditional tea ceremonies and the famous onsen.

This is also a wonderful time to explore cities like Kyoto and Osaka at a slower pace. You can enjoy scenic walks and long evenings sampling seasonal dishes without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Japan is one of my top places to visit in March, and I’m sure it will be one of yours, too.

Dublin, Ireland

We lived in Dublin for four years, and spring was always my favorite time of the year. In March, the days grow longer, and flowers start to bloom.

March is when St. Patrick’s Day celebrations take over Dublin, filling the city with music and parades. But even beyond the festivities, there’s something special about Dublin in early spring. Parks turn greener, pub doors stay open a little later, and the city feels lighter, happier, and more alive.

It’s an ideal time to explore on foot, walking along the River Liffey, visiting museums, or taking the train along the coastline. If you’re looking for the best places to go in March in Europe, Dublin is a wonderful place to start.

Granada, Spain

One piece of advice for travelers who love history and old architecture: don’t overlook Granada, Spain. March is a dream month to visit, and spring arrives early in southern Spain.

The Alhambra is the highlight of the city, of course, with its intricate Moorish design and lush gardens. Wander the winding streets of the Albaicín and let your eyes stretch across the distant Sierra Nevada mountains.

Granada also shines when it comes to food. Tapas culture here is a delight, with small plates often served alongside your drink, making every evening a leisurely celebration of local flavors.

It’s one of the best places to travel in Europe in March and a highlight of any Spanish itinerary. Learn more about what to do in Granada with our Granada itinerary.

Tulip fields and canals in Amsterdam, a top March travel destination.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

For years, Amsterdam sat at the top of my bucket list, and visiting at the end of March, right as the tulips started flowering, instantly made it one of my favorite places to travel in March.

We spent our mornings in the city eating warm apple pie and drinking coffee at canal-side cafés, watching locals glide past on their bikes. In the afternoons, we wandered local markets, discovered vintage shops, and spent hours reading in bookstores. We got lost in museums and sailed through the canals on what was the most touristy, but unforgettable and fun, boat tour. In the evenings, we enjoyed dinners at neighborhood restaurants or intimate Italian kitchens tucked away from the main streets.

For a couple of days, we went to the countryside to see endless fields of tulips. We rented a tandem bicycle and spent hours cycling through the flower fields, soaking in the colors and fresh spring air.

Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood one of the best places to travel in March for city life

Rome, Italy

Rome in March is everything you want Italy to be: romantic, walkable, and full of life, without the crowds and heat of summer. Spring brings mild temperatures that make touring archaeological ruins, piazzas, and neighborhoods like Trastevere an absolute pleasure.

You can wander through the Colosseum and Roman Forum comfortably, enjoy long lunches outdoors, and spend afternoons drinking espresso or wine while taking in the city moving around you. Churches are quieter, and museums are easier to navigate.

March is also ideal for indulging in seasonal Italian cuisine and enjoying Rome at a slower pace.

City view of Lisbon promenade, during a spring March day

Lisbon, Portugal

We spent the entire month of March exploring Portugal and fell completely in love with Lisbon. The city’s golden light, gentle warmth without the heat, and relaxed pace of life turn it into an unforgettable experience.

Lisbon is a city for dreamers and travelers who love to slow down. Whether you call it la dolce niente in Italy or simply living well in Portugal, Lisbon is one of the best places to visit in March.

Our days were spent walking along the waterfront promenade, stopping for natural wine at tiny bars where locals spilled onto the sidewalks, and striking up conversations that always lasted longer than planned. We took pottery and coffee-making classes, explored historic neighborhoods, and ate arroz de polvo at small, local restaurants.

And then there were the pastries, especially the éclairs at Time Out Market, some of the best we’ve had outside of France.
