Best Time To Visit Positano
Is Positano, Italy your dream vacation on the Amalfi Coast? It was definitely a dream destination for me! Visiting this scenic seaside town was one of the highlights of my world travels, and I always recommend it to friends and family thinking about an Italian trip. If you’re planning your own trip to the Amalfi Coast, this blog will help you decide when is the best time for you to visit Positano!
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT POSITANO ITALY?
The peak season on the Amalfi Coast starts at the end of April and runs through the end of September. The “peak of the peak season” runs from the end of June to the end of August. However, in my opinion, the best time to visit Positano is in the Spring, at the end of May/beginning of June. During this time, temperatures are high, there are few crowds, and prices are considerably cheaper.
Spring (March thru June)
Spring is my favorite season to visit the Amalfi coast, especially if you are coming from a colder area like Northern Europe, Northern U.S or Canada. The relative lack of other tourists means you’ll get more personal attention, so it’s the perfect time to discover the region and make friends with the locals. Plus, you’ll get significantly better value for your money.
Just keep in mind that the high season officially starts after Easter, so I recommend waiting a week or so after this date to visit. Many restaurants and hotels in Positano are seasonal and only open after Easter. You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to enjoy a delicious aperol spritz at one of the sidewalk cafes along the beach! While the water temperatures will still be chilly until around the beginning of June, if you visit Positano during April you’ll get the opportunity to see the jasmine trees blossom and and enjoy the area without fighting crowds. If you don’t mind the colder water, there are always people swimming even early in the season!
Summer (July thru September)
In the Amalfi Coast, Positano is definitely the place to see and be seen during the summer months! The celebrities love it, I’m obsessed with it, and you won’t want to leave once you experience everything the area has to offer from July to September.
There are tons of fun things to do in the area, from sailing to concerts to relaxing on the beach and people watching.
There are definitely considerably more people visiting Positano during these summer months, so if crowds are not your thing I advise you to plan your activities carefully during those dates. Also, prices are considerably higher, especially in the middle of July and August. Places book up very quickly, so make sure you don’t wait until the last minute to reserve your lodging. I recommend booking everything in advance if these are your traveling dates, especially your parking spot if you are driving to the area. Parking can be quite difficult in Positano, so make sure you secure a spot before arriving!
Pro tips: A good way to avoid the crowds is to start your day early! You can also go sailing and swimming in one of the coast’s less popular beaches or coves. Consider staying in a private villa instead of a hotel if you will be sending a lot of your time outside of the main town of Positano. There are many gorgeous ones that you can find on AirBnB and other similar sites.
In the summer months, September is a great time to visit Positano and the Amalfi Coast in general. You can still enjoy the beach and the high temperatures, and it will be considerably less crowded.
Fall & Winter (October to Easter)
My friends and I love to visit places during the off season. “My season is the off season,” as we often joke with each other. However, for Positano and the Amalfi Coast as a whole, you might want to reconsider visiting during the off season. Of course, it all depends on what kind of experience you are looking for!
In the fall and winter months the temperatures will drop considerably, and if you visit during these months be prepared for most sidewalk cafes and touristy restaurants to be closed. Many of the locals will move to different areas for the winter, and the villages will be empty in comparison to the rest of the year.
With that said, you can still enjoy a memorable experience in Positano in the winter! No matter when, there’s nothing like enjoying a good wine and eating a delicious pasta while looking at the waves crashing onto the shore. You can have a seriously romantic escapade by spending a few days in the seaside village walking, enjoying your significant other’s company, and watching sunsets while cozying up in a fuzzy blanket. During the colder months, you can still enjoy activities such as hiking in one of the area’s many mountain trails. Gorgeous views and the freshest air await on top of the mountains! Il Sentiero degli Dei (the Path of the Gods) is the most famous of these trails, and it definitely worth spending a few hours on.
Regardless of when you plan to visit Positano and the Amalfi Coast, I can promise you an incredible trip that will make you fall in love with the area!
