The 9 Best Road Trip Routes in Europe
Europe is one of the best places in the world for road trips. Within a few hours of driving, you can move between regions, cuisines, landscapes, and centuries of history. Castles rise over vineyards, Roman ruins sit beside medieval towns, and some of the worldโs greatest food and wine regions lie just a scenic drive apart.
Below are nine of the best road trip routes in Europe. These routes focus on breathtaking places, iconic scenery, famous food and drink, and the cultural stories that make Europe unforgettable. Most importantly, they are places meant to be enjoyed and savored, not rushed.
The Scottish Highlands-North Coast 500
Route: Edinburgh โ Inverness โ Loch Ness โ Isle of Skye โ Glencoe
If youโre searching for the best road trip routes in Europe, the Scottish Highlands Loop is easily one of the most unforgettable. This route takes you through mountains, ancient castles, legendary lochs, and charming Highland towns.
We actually just completed this road trip for my birthday, starting in Edinburgh, and we came back home so obsessed that we dreamt about moving to Scotland for weeks. The landscapes are dramatic and wild, the people are friendly, and every corner seems to reveal another castle, loch, or sweeping valley.
The full Highlands loop can be driven in 4-8 days, though stretching it to a week-long Scotland road trip gives you time to enjoy hikes, castle visits, and whisky tastings along the way.
Edinburgh
Begin your road trip in Edinburgh, Scotlandโs historic capital and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With its medieval Old Town, elegant Georgian New Town, and dramatic hilltop castle, itโs the perfect starting point before driving into the Highlands.
Spend at least one full day exploring Edinburgh, though we recommend three days in the city. Walk the historic Royal Mile, enjoy some great food, and hike up Arthurโs Seat for panoramic views over the city.
Check out our in-depth guide to the best things to do in Edinburgh.
Popular experiences to book in Edinburgh:
Inverness
From Edinburgh, drive about 3.5 hours (250 km / 155 miles) to Inverness, often called the capital of the Scottish Highlands.
Visit Inverness Castle and stroll along the scenic riverbanks before continuing deeper into the Highlands. If you are there during lunch or dinner, go to the Highlander Bar. We had the best meal of our trip there. We ordered two Scottish classics: beer-battered haddock and steak and ale pie.
Another highlight of our Scottish Highlands road trip was a visit to the historic mill at Johnstons of Elgin. If you have extra time while exploring the Highlands, consider making a short detour about an hour northeast of Inverness to the town of Elgin in Scotlandโs Moray region.
This stop is especially worthwhile if you love craftsmanship, heritage, and traditional textiles. Johnstons of Elgin is one of Scotlandโs most renowned producers of luxury wool and cashmere, and the company has been crafting fine textiles there since 1797. What makes the experience even more special is that the mill is still fully operational today.
We booked a private mill tour at the Johnstons of Elgin store, which cost about ยฃ25 per person, and learned about the traditional process of transforming wool and cashmere into the beautifully finished knitwear the company is known for worldwide. It was fascinating to see the craftsmanship and work that goes into pieces you often find in luxury boutiques.
If you have extra time while in Elgin, stop by the nearby ruins of Elgin Cathedral, often called the โLantern of the North.โ Once one of the most magnificent medieval cathedrals in Scotland, its dramatic stone ruins are still incredibly impressive and make for a memorable historical stop.
Popular experiences to book near Inverness and in the Speyside region :
Loch Ness
Just 30 minutes from Inverness, Loch Ness is one of the most famous lakes in the world thanks to the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.
One of the highlights here is the dramatic ruins of Urquhart Castle, which sit directly on the shores of the loch and offer incredible views of the water.
Popular experiences to book at Loch Ness:
Isle of Skye
From the Scottish Highlands, drive about 2.5 to 3 hours west to the Isle of Skye, one of the most postcard-worthy destinations along this Scottish Highlands road trip and easily one of the best road trip routes in Europe. The island feels wild, remote, and incredibly peaceful.
Rather than rushing between viewpoints, Skye is a place to slow down and take your time. Pull over often, buy fresh eggs from locals if you are staying for a few days in an Airbnb, follow small roads that lead to incredible coastal viewpoints, and linger in tiny villages with cozy cafรฉs. The island is famous for its dramatic landscapes, with rugged mountains and waterfalls tumbling down steep cliffs.
Two of the most iconic sights are the sweeping ridges of Quiraing and the towering rock formation known as the Old Man of Storr. Hiking to these viewpoints early in the morning is especially magical, when the fog still lingers over the hills.
Our favorite stop on Skye ended up being the legendary Fairy Pools and the nearby Sligachan Old Bridge. According to local folklore, dipping your face into the icy water beneath the bridge for seven seconds brings eternal beauty and good luck. We couldnโt resist trying it, even in the middle of winter on a 20ยฐF cloudy day.
The water was absolutely freezing. We laughed through the shock, soaked our knees trying to get low enough to dip our faces, and I even ended up with my entire head and hair drenched. We sprinted back to the car, only to be greeted by a herd of sheep in the parking lot, before immediately blasting the heat. But in the middle of all that chaos, the moment felt timeless, wild, spontaneous, and completely unforgettable.
To fully embrace our dream of living like Skye locals, we stayed in a bed and breakfast overlooking the water, waking up to misty views of the coastline and enjoying an incredible, homemade, wholesome breakfast each morning.
Another must-see while on the island is Dunvegan Castle, the historic seat of Clan MacLeod and the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland.
Popular experiences to book on the Isle of Skye:
Glencoe
On your way back south toward Edinburgh, stop in Glencoe, one of the most dramatic valleys in Scotland. This is one of the most photographed places in the Highlands.
Glencoe also holds an important place in Scottish history as the site of the Massacre of Glencoe.
Today, itโs known for its incredible scenery and hiking trails.

The Tulip Route, Netherlands
Route: Amsterdam โ Haarlem โ Leiden
If youโre dreaming of the ultimate Europe road trip, the Dutch Tulip Route is one of the best road trip routes in Europe. Every spring, the Dutch countryside bursts into color as millions of tulips bloom across fields and gardens, transforming the region into one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.
Spring is truly the perfect time to take this road trip, typically from late March through early May, when flower fields extend across the countryside in shades of pink, yellow, purple, and red. What makes this route especially wonderful is that it allows you to stop often, rent bikes, wander through small towns, and enjoy long picnics beside canals and flower fields.
This loop from Amsterdam can easily be done in one full day, but if you enjoy traveling slowly, itโs worth stretching it into two or three relaxed days so you can explore the countryside at a gentler pace.
We did it a couple of years ago, and itโs still one of my favorite travel memories.
Amsterdam
Start your tulip road trip in Amsterdam, one of Europe's coolest cities. If you imagine Europe as a place of stylish locals, incredible food, and a slower pace of life, where people bike to work, meet friends for natural wine in the evening, and hop into a small canal boat to watch the sunset, Amsterdam embodies all of that and more. Itโs the ideal place to ease into Dutch life before heading out into the countryside.
A few things we recommend, even if you only have one day in the city, are walking along the canals, people watching at a vintage market, or gathering supplies for the road ahead. Pick up picnic snacks before leaving the city: fresh bread, local cheeses, fruit, and pastries from neighborhood bakeries to enjoy later on your drive.
If you are planning a few days in Amsterdam before your road trip, we share a full Amsterdam itinerary guide that covers the best restaurants, neighborhoods, markets, and canals to explore.
Haarlem
Just 30 minutes from Amsterdam, Haarlem feels like a quieter, slower-paced version of the capital. Its historic canals, charming streets, and lively squares make it a perfect first stop.
The heart of the city is the beautiful Grote Markt, a historic square surrounded by cafรฉs and anchored by the impressive St. Bavo's Church.
From Haarlem, continue about 30 minutes south to Keukenhof, often called the โGarden of Europe.โ The park features more than seven million flowers in bloom each spring, including tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils arranged in elaborate garden displays.
Even though Keukenhof is one of the most visited attractions in the Netherlands, visiting early in the morning makes the experience feel much calmer and more enjoyable.
After exploring the gardens, take time to drive or cycle through the surrounding countryside. This is one of the best places along the route to pull over, lay out a blanket, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by flowers.
Popular activities to book in Haarlem:
Leiden
Leiden is a charming and historic university town that makes a perfect final stop before returning to Amsterdam. Itโs also the birthplace of Rembrandt, and the city is filled with canals, bridges, and brick houses that feel wonderfully authentic.
Compared to Amsterdam, Leiden has a more relaxed, local atmosphere.
On a sunny spring afternoon, itโs easy to see why this town is beloved by locals, as trees begin to bloom, canals reflect rows of historic houses, and outdoor terraces fill with people enjoying the season.

Ireland Road Trips
Ireland is made for road trips, with its untouched coastlines, rolling green hills, charming villages, and historic cities. Whether you love coastal drives, rugged cliffs, cozy pubs, or ancient castles, the island has something for everyone.
Having lived in Ireland, weโve taken countless road trips across the Emerald Isle. Of course, no list of Irelandโs best road trip routes would be complete without the Wild Atlantic Way or a drive through Wicklow Mountain National Park. Other popular routes include east-to-west journeys and Northern Ireland.
We recommend spending 10 to 14 days in Ireland, so you have time to explore famous cities, take epic road trips, and enjoy the countryside. Early fall or late spring is ideal: the weather is crisp, and the light over the Atlantic coast gives everything a golden glow.
Check out our complete Dublin to Cliffs of Moher road trip guide and our best places to visit in Ireland guide, with full details for Northern Ireland and the Wild Atlantic road trips.
Andalusia and Southern Spain Road Trip
Route: Seville โ Ronda โ Granada โ Costa del Sol
Southern Spain is one of the best summer road-trip destinations in Europe. The region is popular among Europeans but not as frequently visited by Americans as Amalfi or some Greek islands, which means fewer tourists, lower prices, and incredible beaches and coastal coves.
Add Moorish palaces, whitewashed villages, and outstanding seafood and tapas, and itโs easy to see why this region is unmissable. A couple of years ago, we spent August in southern Spain sipping sangria, road-tripping, and swimming in calas, and we canโt wait to go back. This route can be comfortably explored in 5โ7 days.
Seville
Seville is the heart of Andalusia. The city is famous for its flamenco music and orange-scented streets. Explore the Gothic Seville Cathedral and the Alcรกzar Palace, stroll through the Santa Cruz neighborhood, and savor tapas like jamรณn ibรฉrico, salmorejo, and grilled sardines. Summer mornings are perfect for slow wandering before the heat of the day sets in, and in the evenings, head to a terrace to dine and watch a flamenco show.
Popular activities to book in Seville:
Ronda
From Seville, drive about 2 hours east to Ronda, a dramatic hill town perched on cliffs above a deep gorge. The Puente Nuevo bridge offers breathtaking views, while the cobbled streets and whitewashed houses feel timeless. Ronda can be quite hot in the middle of the summer, so we recommend pairing a bit of exploration with plenty of eating, drinking, and resting in shaded squares. The town is small enough to explore comfortably in a day or even just a half day.
Popular activities to book in Ronda:
Beaches
Along the southern coast, youโll find clear-water beaches and hidden calas. Places like Marbella, Malaga, Nerja, Almuรฑรฉcar, and Salobreรฑa are known for their whitewashed streets, turquoise waters, and seaside charm. Summer is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or walking coastal trails that lead to secret bays and calas.
The most beautiful beaches are definitely hidden, like little treasures along the coast. Each day, we wandered down a different trail. Paved coastal roads only get you so far before they turn into bumpy dirt paths. Cars can only take you to a certain point, and after that, you walk.
Along the way, we met locals who guided us to secret calas, hiked alongside us, and when we got too hot, leapt with us from small cliffs into the sparkling turquoise waters of the Alboran Sea. Authentic European summers, whoโs in?
Every splash, every laugh, even every slip, wove memories weโll carry forever. Bring water, sunscreen, wear sneakers, and practice your parallel parking skills, youโll need them.
Afterward, head to a chiringuito, a beachfront shack restaurant, to enjoy fresh seafood and local sangria, or visit a popular beach for a sunset party.
Granada
Granada is home to the Alhambra, one of Europeโs most stunning examples of Islamic architecture. In summer, early mornings are ideal for exploring the palace and gardens before the crowds arrive. Wander the Albaicรญn neighborhood, meandering through narrow streets that open to spectacular city views.

The Paris to Normandy Route, France
Route: Paris โ Loir Valley โ Rouen โ Mont Saint-Michel โ รtretat
The Paris-to-Normandy route might be the dark horse of this list. If you love fall weather, apples, rainy days, and slow travel, this is definitely one of the best road trips in Europe. This loop is perfect for seeing the French countryside, sampling local cuisine and apple ciders, and winding up in cities loved by the French.
We recommend taking a 7-10 day road trip. Early fall is ideal for this journey: the weather is mild, summer crowds have thinned, and the autumn colors add a warm, golden glow to the countryside.
Paris
Start in Paris. Spend a day or two exploring iconic sights and art galleries, eating, drinking, and getting lost in the streets of Le Marais.
For travelers wanting to make the most of the city before heading out, check our full Paris itinerary guide, which covers the best things to do in Paris.
Loire Valley
Explore the regionโs vineyards, visiting small wineries and biking through rows of grapevines. Sample French pastries along the way, we tried รฉclairs in the early part of our trip and apple tarts while in Normandy.
Popular activities to book in the Loire Valley:
Normandy
Among our top recommendations is going apple picking, visiting a working apple farm, and tasting crisp cider, warming calvados, and sweet pommeau. Pick up apple tarts in every charming village you pass, and sample creamy Camembert cheese along the way. Then drive through the rainy hills and sun-dappled countryside. We spent hours on those roads, soaking in the cozy fall weather and playing random but perfectly fitting French playlists we found on Spotify, trying to sing along to the words.
Suddenly, we spotted a fabulous French lady, a silk scarf fluttering in her hair and a cigarette in her hand, cruising in an old convertible Mercedes. She stopped on a quiet lane, wandered into a wildflower field, plucked a few blooms, and waved at us with effortless grace. Of course, I couldnโt resist, so we turned the car around, ran back to the field, and did the same, minus the scarf and cigarette. Because when in France, you simply must live like the French.
Donโt miss trying fresh Normandy omelets, made famous by La Mรจre Poulard.
Mont Saint-Michel
Mont Saint-Michel is one of Franceโs most iconic landmarks. Early fall is a wonderful time to visit, and the island feels almost magical as you approach the tidal causeway.
The abbey atop the island is a must-see, with centuries of history, Gothic architecture, and sweeping views over the bay. Spend time watching the tide roll in and visit the abbey either for the prayers or the vespers. We went to the vespers led by the nuns, and it was one of the most beautiful and grounding moments of our visit.
Popular activities to book at Mont Saint-Michel:
รtretat
Finish your Normandy coastal route with รtretat, a picturesque seaside town famous for its white cliffs, natural arches, and dramatic coastline. Early fall is the ideal season for a quiet, peaceful visit; the beaches are nearly empty, the air is fresh, and itโs easy to pop into one of the popular restaurants.
The town itself has a charming, small-town atmosphere with colorful cafรฉs, local bakeries, and seafood restaurants lining the harbor. Enjoy fresh oysters, mussels, or a classic seafood platter, paired with a crisp local cider or white wine, while taking in views of the English Channel.
Rouen
Rouen was the capital of Normandy, known for its Gothic cathedrals, half-timbered houses, and cobblestone streets. Explore the Rouen Cathedral, wander the medieval squares, and indulge in French pastries, apple cider, and Camembert cheese.
Popular activities to book in Rouen:

Check out our complete 7-10 day Northern Italy road trip itinerary that covers all the must-see destinations, hidden gems, and seasonal activities.
Portuguese Coastal Route to Porto
Route: Lisbon โ Sintra โ Nazarรฉ โ Aveiro โ Porto
Portugalโs coastline is a dream for those who love sun, surf, and seafood. Winter is our favorite time to visit; the temperatures along the coast are mild, and the waves are perfect for surfing. We spent a month in Portugal, which is peak surfing season, and absolutely fell in love with the vibes, waves, and vibrant seafood culture. We have gone back during the summer, but nothing compares to that first trip.
This road trip is perfect for seven days or longer, so you can explore the towns, get a surf lesson, and savor Portugalโs culinary highlights like arroz de polvo (octopus rice) and crisp Vinho Verde.
Lisbon
Start in Lisbon, a city of hills, colorful tiles, and centuries of history. Wander the Alfama district, sip espresso in a cafรฉ, and donโt miss a bite of the famous pastรฉis de nata custard tarts. Lisbon is also a foodie paradise. We ate fresh seafood, sampled petiscos (Portuguese tapas), and got lost in the food markets.
If you are looking for the top things to do in Lisbon, check out our complete Lisbon itinerary.
Sintra
Drive about 40 minutes west to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage town full of fairy-tale palaces, castles, and lush hills. Highlights include Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and winding gardens full of mossy paths and fountains. Winter brings a quiet, misty charm that makes slow exploration even more magical.
Nazarรฉ
Next, head about 1.5 hours north to Nazarรฉ, famous for giant Atlantic waves and traditional fishing culture. We spent two weeks here during the peak of surfing season, and it was incredible. The town has a friendly, laid-back vibe, colorful fishing boats lining the beach, and incredible seafood restaurants serving dishes like arroz de polvo and freshly grilled sardines.
Winter in Nazarรฉ is perfect for surf lessons, slow walks along the cliffs, and watching professional surfers tackle record-breaking waves at Praia do Norte. The sunsets over the Atlantic are unforgettable.
Popular activities to book in Nazarรฉ:
Aveiro
Aveiro is often called the โVenice of Portugal,โ with its canals lined with art nouveau buildings, colorful moliceiro boats, and quiet side streets. You must try ovos moles, a sweet egg-yolk pastry, best enjoyed with a warm coffee.
Popular activities to book in Aveiro:
Porto
Porto is famous for Port wine, medieval architecture, and riverside charm. Stroll along the Ribeira district, cross the Dom Luรญs I Bridge, and enjoy a glass of Vinho Verde or a tasting at a local port wine cellar. The cityโs food is outstanding. And let us know which you loved more, Lisbon or Porto; Portuguese always have a preference, especially if they are football fans.
Amalfi Coast Road Trip, Italy
Route: Naples โ Sorrento โ Positano โ Amalfi โ Ravello โ Salerno
Among the best road trip routes in Europe, the Amalfi Coast Drive winds along cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, connecting colorful seaside villages, historic towns, and panoramic viewpoints. The drive itself is only about 65 km (40 miles) and can technically be completed in 3-4 hours, but most travelers stretch it into a 3-7 day road trip, hopping among towns and beaches to fully experience the regionโs scenery, gardens, historic landmarks, and coastal cuisine.
Most people visit the Amalfi Coast in the summer, when the temperatures are just right for swimming in the swimming spots and sea grottos. However, if you prefer a slower, more relaxed travel experience, we recommend visiting in early fall (late September to early October) or in mid-to-late spring, after Easter.
The area is extremely popular with international visitors, and summer is peak season, which often means crowded towns, long lines at major sights, and significantly higher hotel prices. Traveling during fall and spring allows you to enjoy the same dramatic coastal scenery, restaurants, and historic villages with fewer crowds and more reasonable prices, making the Amalfi Coast road trip far more enjoyable.
Naples and Pompeii
Start in Naples, one of Italyโs most energetic cities and the birthplace of pizza. For most travelers, this is also where youโll fly into before setting off along one of the best road trip routes in Europe.
Plan to spend half a day to a full day exploring Naples before beginning the coastal drive. Wander through the streets of the city center, taste the dishes that made Naples famous, or join a local food experience to sample classic specialties like pizza, sfogliatella, and espresso. We took a Neapolitan pizza-making class with a local chef, which turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.
If youโre interested in history, take time to explore the historic center or visit the nearby ruins of Pompeii Archaeological Park, the Roman city famously buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Popular experiences to book:
Sorrento
About 1 hour from Naples, Sorrento is one of the most scenic first stops along this famous European road trip route. The town sits above the Bay of Naples and is famous for its fragrant lemon groves and production of limoncello.
While visiting, wander through the historic center, visit the cloisters of Chiostro di San Francesco, and explore Marina Grande and Marina Piccola. Sorrento is also a great place to shop for ceramics and enjoy fresh mozzarella and pizza.
Popular experiences to book:
Positano
About 45 minutes from Sorrento, Positano is one of the most famous villages in Italy and a highlight of this Amalfi Coast road trip. Pastel-colored houses cascade down the cliffs toward the sea, creating one of the most photographed landscapes along the Mediterranean.
Despite its small size, Positano offers plenty to explore. Spend time wandering its narrow streets, relaxing on Spiaggia Grande, and enjoying seafood and local wine at a seaside restaurant.
For a deeper look at the villageโs viewpoints, beaches, restaurants, and hidden corners, check out our complete things to do in Positano guide, where we explore the town in much more detail.
Amalfi
Just 30 minutes from Positano, Amalfi was once one of the powerful maritime republics of medieval Italy. Today, it remains one of the most vibrant towns on the coast.
The centerpiece of the town is the striking Amalfi Cathedral, which rises dramatically above the piazza. You can also visit the elegant cloisters of Chiostro del Paradiso or explore the regionโs paper-making history at the Museo della Carta.
Ravello
A 20-minute drive uphill from Amalfi, Ravello offers some of the most breathtaking views along the entire Amalfi Coast. Though it sits above the sea rather than directly on it, the town is famous for its elegant villas and terraced gardens.
The highlights are Villa Rufolo, a 13th-century estate with Moorish influences, and Villa Cimbrone, home to the famous โTerrace of Infinityโ overlooking the coastline.
After exploring, stop for lunch at Da Salvatore, known for traditional dishes like nunderi gnocchi paired with regional wines.
Salerno
Finish your Amalfi Coast journey in Salerno, about 1 hour from Ravello. Less crowded than the more famous villages, Salerno offers a charming historic center, seaside promenade, and excellent restaurants.
Visit the historic Salerno Cathedral, stroll along the Lungomare Trieste waterfront, and enjoy fresh seafood with a glass of local Campania wine.
The Greek Peloponnese Loop
Route: Athens โ Corinth Canal โ Mycenae โ Nafplio โ Olympia
Last but not least on our list of the best road trip routes in Europe is the Greek Peloponnese Loop. The region is very inviting during the summer.Winter is also a surprisingly beautiful time to visit, as you can catch snow-capped mountains, enjoy quieter archaeological sites, and experience local life without the crowds.
We recommend spending 4-6 days on this loop, giving you plenty of time to wander ancient ruins, stroll coastal towns, savor regional cuisine, and soak in the slower pace of Greek winter life.
Athens
Begin in Athens and explore the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Ancient Agora, taking your time to absorb the history. Sample Greek pastries like bougatsa and loukoumades, accompanied by a warm coffee.
For travelers starting in Athens, check out our full Athens guide with a step-by-step itinerary.
Corinth Canal
About 1 hour west of Athens is the Corinth Canal, an impressive engineering wonder that slices through limestone to connect the Aegean and Ionian Seas.
Mycenae
Next, head about 30 minutes southwest to Mycenae, the legendary home of King Agamemnon. Explore the Lion Gate, royal tombs, and ancient ruins at a leisurely pace.
Nafplio
30-40 minutes from Mycenae is Nafplio, one of Greeceโs most romantic towns, with its seafront promenades and Venetian architecture. Nafplio is famous for its seafood, local cheeses, and loukoumi sweets, best enjoyed without the summer crowds.
On your way to Olympia, we recommend a detour to an olive oil farm in the Peloponnese hills. Winter is harvest season, so you can see the pressing process, walk among olive groves, and taste freshly produced extra virgin olive oil. During our trip, we visited an olive oil farm, witnessing the entire production process from picking to pressing, and tasted some of the freshest olive oil weโve ever had.
Olympia
Finish your Peloponnese loop in Olympia, about 2 hours southwest, where the ancient Olympic Games were born. Explore the temples, ruins, and the archaeological museum.
From sunny coastlines and lively cities to golden autumn landscapes, we hope this guide to the best road trip routes in Europe has inspired your next adventure.
Remember that the most memorable trips are not always about famous landmarks or packed itineraries. Often, it is the little moments that stay with us: the scent of roasted chestnuts drifting through a market, a rooftop cocktail as the sun sets over the city, or a quiet stroll through a field.
