5 Turmeric Lip Scrub DIY Recipes You Need to Try!
With colder months approaching, chances of getting dry, dull, and chapped lips are as high or even higher than in the summer.
We get dull and dry lips in the summer due to high temperatures and overexposure to UV rays. But, during the winter, our lips get dry and chapped due to colder temperatures, dry winds, vitamin deficiencies, and dehydration.
Good nutrition and proper water intake are crucial to improving skin health and having healthy-looking lips, so much so that recent research studies highlight the importance of winter hydration.
Having a beauty and skin wellness routine using natural ingredients is also essential. It's a great way to avoid harsh chemicals companies often add to beauty products without proper disclosure.
Turmeric is one of those natural ingredients used for centuries in East Africa and East Asia.
We recently came back from Ethiopia, where we learned about a few other ingredients that, when mixed with turmeric, will leave your lips looking healthy and glowing in no time.
Read on to learn how to make turmeric lip scrubs from scratch as I share my favorite recipes and tips and tricks I have learned along the way.
Thyme, Turmeric, and Milk Lip Scrub for Sensitive and Dry Lips
You can use this gentle but highly effective DIY turmeric lip scrub on all lip types year-round, especially in the winter.
Turmeric is a staple of Indian and Ethiopian cuisines and one of my favorite ingredients in homemade lip scrub recipes. It is a natural anti-oxidant popularly used to treat hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
Say goodbye to sun-damaged dull lips and hello to your natural lip color!
Thyme is used in Ethiopia as a natural home remedy to treat lips, mouth, and throat conditions. Something we were surprised to learn from our guide on our recent trip to the Simien Mountains. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, helping your lips stay healthy and reducing inflammation and infection risks.
On the other hand, goat milk is often used to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and eczema. It has excellent soothing properties and will gently help exfoliate the dead skin from your lips, providing relief and reducing dryness and irritation.
1 Β½ teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon of goat milk
In a grinder or food processor, grind dry turmeric and dry thyme (one at a time) until finely ground. Alternatively, you can use Organic Turmeric Root Powder and Ground Thyme. Mix the turmeric powder and thyme powder in a separate container. Once thoroughly mixed, add the goat milk until it forms a uniform paste.
Gently rub the lip scrub into your lips and around your mouth. Rinse off carefully with room temperature water.
Store the leftovers in a glass container and put the container in the fridge for a significant cooling effect with the following application.
Turmeric and Brown Sugar Scrub Recipe
This everyday turmeric scrub recipe combines very easily accessible, wholesome ingredients. Nothing fancy, but everything is highly effective!
I used a similar version of the recipe frequently on my face, and it is very popular among my friends.
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon brown sugar
Β½ teaspoon Raw honey
1 teaspoon of Argan or Coconut oil
1 teaspoon of essential oils (optional)
Add the brown sugar and turmeric in a glass bowl until evenly mixed. Next, add honey, Argan oil, and some essential oils. Combine everything thoroughly until it turns into a thick paste.
Essential oils that we recommend using with this recipe are cinnamon and wild orange.
Vitamin E Oil & Turmeric Scrub for Sun-damaged and dull lips
In the summer, many people frequently use sunscreen to shield themselves from the harmful effects of the sun's rays.
During this process, we frequently neglect our lips, and as a result, many of us become more vulnerable to getting our lips sunburned. If your lips are redder or darker than usual this summer, that's a tell-tell sign that your lips have fallen victim to sunburn.
Those looking for a DIY turmeric lip scrub that refreshes and brightens their lips during this time will be happy to learn that this aloe vera and turmeric homemade combination is the one for you! This mix will brighten your lips, leaving them feeling tighter, softer, and more hydrated.
1 teaspoon turmeric

Turmeric and Avocado Homemade Lip Scrub For Maximum Hydration
This seasonless recipe can and should be used frequently throughout the year. It will help your lips stay healthy and maintain your natural brown or pink lip color. It's a very gentle but powerful exfoliator.
The mix of turmeric, Qasil powder, jojoba oil, and avocado will leave your lips feeling firmer, softer, and more youthful.
Qasil Powder is a traditional Somalian spice frequently used in DIY beauty recipes. It has anti-aging and anti-oxidant properties, among many other benefits.
Qasil Powder has become extremely popular in East Africa, where women swear by it. They strongly believe it has helped them maintain their youthful look and natural glow. They use the powder in masks, scrubs, and even lip balms.
I learned about it on our recent trip to Ethiopia, and now I'm completely hooked.
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon Qasil Powder
1 teaspoon of Jojoba oil
Avocado
Mix the turmeric and the Qasil powder in a glass container, and add the smashed avocado and the jojoba oil until it all becomes a homogenous paste. Apply this homemade turmeric lip scrub, and massage gently on your lips and around your mouth before rinsing it off.
Ginger, Lemon, and Turmeric Exfoliating Scrub for brighter and plumper lips
Many homemade lip and body scrub recipes use lemon juice as an ingredient, yet I'm always hesitant when using it in my scrubs due to its acid component. It can make the skin more sensitive to the sun or create redness and irritation in certain areas, especially in people with allergic components.
Nonetheless, this recipe works magically on those looking to lighten their lips from darker shades to natural colors. People often use raw cocoa butter in the Caribbean to help hydrate dry skin and remove dark spots.
Keep an eye on the amounts of lemon juice in the mix and apply the scrub only on your lips and not around the mouth, as I recommended in previous recipes.
Remember to rinse with warm water thoroughly at least twice after the application.
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon ginger.
1 teaspoon of raw cocoa butter
Β½ teaspoon of lemon juice
