4 Days in Paris Itinerary: The Perfect Paris Guide for First-Time & Returning Travelers
Paris wasn’t always one of my favorite destinations; even after three visits, I couldn’t quite understand the obsession. It wasn’t until my fourth time in Paris that I truly fell in love with the city. The difference this time was that I focused more on having real-life experiences rather than chasing the quintessential tourist checklist. I slowed down, traded some of the big landmarks for quiet mornings in local cafés, and lived my 4 days in Paris like a local.
And that’s when everything changed. I discovered a side of Paris that felt deeply personal, one filled with hidden courtyards, vintage markets, neighborhood bakeries, and long walks by the Seine. I connected with the rhythm of the city rather than rushing through it, and that’s when I finally understood why so many people fall under its spell.
Paris is a destination that almost everyone dreams of visiting at least once in their lifetime. The allure of its food, art, and the uniqueness of each arrondissement (neighborhood) make it endlessly fascinating. Whether you come for the culture, the romance, or the simple pleasure of watching the world go by from a terrace, Paris never fails to inspire.
Two of the most common questions for those planning to visit Paris are: How many days do I need to spend in Paris? And is 4 days in Paris enough? Personally, I think 4 days is a good amount of time to explore the city without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Although, if I’m being honest, when explored the local way, Paris is so captivating that you will want to stay longer!
That’s exactly why I felt so compelled to write this comprehensive 4 days in Paris itinerary, to share the balance I finally found between classic sights and local gems. You’ll find all my favorite places here: from small bistros tucked into quiet corners of Le Marais to breathtaking spots like Sainte-Chapelle, along with tips I’ve gathered from Parisian friends I made along the way.
This guide blends both worlds, the iconic and the intimate, to help you experience Paris like a local, with room to slow down and savor it all.
Note: If you’re traveling to Paris for just a weekend, you can still use this 4 days in Paris itinerary as a flexible guide. Pick your favorite neighborhoods and experiences, mix and match at your own pace, and create your very own love story with the City of Light. Alternatively, you can use our 2 days in Paris guide, which focuses more on the city’s most iconic landmarks.
How to Spend 4 Days in Paris?
Day 1: Sainte-Chapelle, Notre-Dame, Marché des Enfants Rouges, Le Marais & More
Stop 1: Sainte-Chapelle and Notre-Dame
Sainte-Chapelle and Notre-Dame are probably two of those places that are in almost everyone’s Paris itinerary. Both are majestic landmarks and masterpieces of Gothic architecture that tell centuries of French history. And if you think the outside is impressive, just wait until you see the inside. Sainte-Chapelle glows with walls of stained glass in jewel tones. When sunlight filters through, it feels as if the entire chapel is lit from within. Just a short walk away stands Notre-Dame de Paris, one of the most iconic cathedrals in the world, its intricate façade and flying buttresses as striking as ever.
Spend the morning exploring the small bridges, hidden courtyards, and the banks of the Seine. It’s the perfect start to your 4 days in Paris, where you’ll get to learn about the city’s deep cultural roots while also soaking in its timeless beauty.
Travel Tip: If you are spending 4 days in Paris during peak season (spring and summer), arrive early in the morning to avoid the long lines and truly enjoy the serenity of the chapels before the crowds arrive.
Once you’ve admired the breathtaking stained glass and Gothic architecture, it’s time to head to another beloved neighborhood in the city to grab some good food and walk around.
Stop 2: Marché des Enfants Rouges!
This is one of my favorite places in Paris. A very busy and colorful establishment, Marché des Enfants Rouges is one of the oldest Parisian markets and has inspired many similar markets around the world. There, you can not only buy ingredients to cook at home (in case you book a cute Airbnb for your 4 days in Paris) but also order some freshly prepared dishes and wine to enjoy sitting down or while strolling through the market.
It is located in the Le Marais district, just a short walk from the Seine, and perfectly blends local life and international flavors. You’ll find vendors serving everything from Moroccan couscous and fresh salads to French cheese boards and sweet crêpes. The atmosphere is always lively, perfect for people-watching, food sampling, and fully embracing your new Parisian persona while spending 4 days in Paris.
Stop 3: Le Marais
After satisfying your appetite, it’s time to explore Le Marais. The neighborhood has everything you can think of and more. My favorite things are the cafés with outdoor seating, the vintage stores, the art galleries, the boutique shops, and the locals coming and going through the cobblestone streets.
If you’re visiting Paris during the spring or fall, make sure to stop by Place des Vosges, one of the oldest and most beautiful squares in the city. It’s perfect for sitting under the shaded arcades and watching life go by with a coffee in hand.
Stop 4: Restaurant Hopping in Le Marais
To finish your first day in the city, dedicate your afternoon and evening to restaurant hopping through the charming streets of Le Marais. Paris is made for slow, delicious evenings, and no 4 days in Paris itinerary would be complete without a little culinary indulgence.
Start with Le Mary Celeste for an afternoon drink. This stylish spot is known for its wine, cocktails, and small plates, perfect to enjoy by the bar or outside as the afternoon light softens over the neighborhood.
Next, head to Folderol for a unique combination: ice cream and orange wine. Since the place often has a wait, it’s easier to order your treats to go and enjoy them right outside on the sidewalk. Locals love standing by the side of the restaurants, chatting and savoring the moment before moving on to their next stop.
If you’re spending longer in Paris (say, a month or more), here’s a little secret that only locals know: the boulangerie on the corner gives away its leftover bread at the end of the day. It’s one of those small Paris moments that make the city feel even more special and intimate.
Finally, to eat and drink like kings while taking in the Parisian atmosphere, head to Isola La Cantine Littéraire. This restaurant combines good food, good wine, and great company, the kind of place where the energy of the city seems to slow down just enough to let you join. Between the candlelight, the hum of French conversation, and the feeling that the night could go on forever, it’s the perfect ending to your first day in Paris.
Day 2: Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Luxembourg Gardens & Left Bank Charm
On your second day in Paris, leave behind the rush of sightseeing and embrace the effortlessly chic atmosphere of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, where café terraces, literary history, and artful charm blend into everyday life.
Stop 1: Morning at Boulangerie Poilâne
Start your morning the Parisian way, with a croissant or pain au chocolat from Boulangerie Poilâne. Once you have your pastry, grab a coffee to go at a café nearby and stroll through the neighborhood as the city slowly comes to life.
Travel Tip: The charm of Saint-Germain lies not only in its iconic cafés and gardens but also in its side streets, peek into bookshops, wander through small galleries, and pause at hidden courtyards. That’s where the classic magic of the 6th arrondissement reveals itself.
Stop 2: Café Culture & Classic Parisian Atmosphere
After eating your croissant and walking around, rent a bike to experience the Left Bank like a local. Head towards Café de Flore, one of the most iconic cafés in Paris. Once frequented by writers like Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, it remains one of the best places to people-watch and soak up that timeless Parisian café culture. Whether you stay for a cappuccino or simply admire the scene from the sidewalk, you’ll love the atmosphere.
Stop 3: La Grande Épicerie de Paris
Just a short walk away, step into La Grande Épicerie, a luxurious grocery store that we adore. This is the perfect spot to pick up more treats, from that popular creamy French butter to fruits and cheese. I love grabbing a few picnic essentials here before heading toward one of my favorite gardens in the city.
Stop 4: Picnic at Luxembourg Gardens
A visit to Jardin du Luxembourg is one of the most romantic experiences you can have during your 4 days in Paris. The gardens feel like something out of a painting, perfectly manicured lawns, blooming flowers, fountains that shimmer in the sunlight, and locals reading or sketching under the shade of centuries-old trees.
The Luxembourg Gardens are timeless and breathtaking in every season, but I have spent my favorite moments there either during the spring when the flowers burst into color, or in early autumn when the leaves turn golden and the air feels crisp. Spread out your picnic blanket, and enjoy your baguette with some French cheese from La Grande Épicerie.
Travel Tip: Stroll around the garden after your picnic. Don’t miss the Medici Fountain, one of the most romantic corners of the park. As the light fades, the whole space glows softly, making it the perfect spot to linger before continuing your evening in Saint-Germain.
Stop 5: Classic Parisian Dinner
In the evening, explore Saint-Germain’s culinary side. One of our favorite restaurants in the area is Relais de l’Entrecôte, famous for its perfectly cooked steak-frites and secret sauce, a must-try for any Paris itinerary. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, L’Démocratie offers a tranquil garden setting where you can enjoy a slow dinner surrounded by greenery and warm light.
For a more elevated dining experience, dine at Sugaar, an intimate fine-dining restaurant just a few steps from Café de Flore. This restaurant blends French cuisine with Asturian influences. Think delicious seafood, rich meats, and thoughtfully paired wines, all served in a refined yet inviting atmosphere. Sugaar captures the essence of the 6th: elegant, creative, and effortlessly romantic.
Stop 6: Wine & Nightlife at Avant Comptoir
End your evening with a stop at Avant Comptoir, a lively standing wine bar loved by locals. Order a glass of natural wine and toast to a perfect day spent living like a Parisian. The energy here is casual, unpretentious, yet full of flavor.
Day 3: Versailles Day Trip: The Palace, Gardens & A Royal Picnic
When spending 4 days in Paris, taking a day trip to Versailles is one of those experiences that truly feels like stepping into another era. The Palace of Versailles is magnificent both inside and out, a masterpiece of French art, architecture, and royal grandeur.
Inside, the palace glimmers with chandeliers, intricate frescoes, and endless corridors of gilded beauty. The Hall of Mirrors alone is reason enough to visit, with sunlight streaming through the tall windows and reflecting off every surface, a dazzling reminder of France’s opulent past.
But for us, the true magic of Versailles happens outside. The gardens stretch endlessly, a harmonious blend of nature and artistry, where sculpted hedges meet marble fountains and serene ponds. I always recommend renting a golf cart to explore the vast estate, just remember to bring your driver’s license, as you’ll need it to rent one. Glide through the tree-lined paths, stop at the smaller palaces like Le Grand Trianon and Le Petit Trianon, and let yourself feel like royalty for a day.
One of my favorite things to do here is to pack a picnic and find a quiet corner by the fountains. As classical music drifts through the air (yes, they play it in the gardens!), sit back, sip on rosé or sparkling water, and simply take it all in: the grandeur, the calm, the golden light reflecting on the water.
For something a little more magical, rent one of the rowboats at the Grand Canal. It reminds me so much of Central Park, only far more majestic. There’s something truly special about rowing under the French sky, surrounded by history and beauty in every direction.
Travel Tip: Visit early in the morning to enjoy the palace before the crowds arrive, and spend your afternoon exploring the gardens and having your picnic. Don’t miss the Musical Fountains Show if you’re visiting in spring or summer. It’s one of the most enchanting moments you’ll experience during your 4 days in Paris.
Day 4: Pigalle, Montmartre, Vintage Treasures & the Opéra Garnier
For your fourth and final day in Paris, spend your morning in one of the city’s most eclectic and fascinating neighborhoods: Pigalle, where bohemian Paris still lingers between music shops, cocktail bars, and vintage boutiques. Once known for its cabarets and vibrant nightlife, Pigalle has transformed into one of the trendiest districts in Paris, full of charm, creativity, and an unmistakable local rhythm.
Stop 1: Start your morning by making your way toward Montmartre, the artistic heart of old Paris. Wander through cobblestone streets, stop by small ateliers and vintage stores, and soak in the views from Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas of the city. Montmartre is the kind of place that feels frozen in time, where painters still set up their easels at Place du Tertre, and cafés spill out onto sunny terraces filled with the sound of clinking glasses and soft chatter.
If you love photography and nostalgia, make sure to stop by the Fotoautomat, a vintage photo booth tucked along the street where you can capture black-and-white snapshots to take home as a keepsake. It’s a simple moment, but it captures the carefree essence of spending 4 days in Paris like a local.
Stop 2: Next, head towards Pigalle and Montmartre to browse some of the thrift and vintage shops and markets. Take your time exploring to find great French designer pieces and Parisian accessories you won’t find anywhere else
Stop 3: When evening starts to settle in, stop by Le Très Particulier, a lush cocktail bar hidden inside Hôtel Particulier Montmartre. Step into its garden-like lounge where velvet armchairs, mirrored walls, and greenery set the mood for an unforgettable drink. Their cocktails are as elegant as the setting, creative, aromatic, and beautifully served. It’s one of my favorite hidden gems in the area, perfect for a pre-opera toast.
Stop 4: Afterwards, make your way to the Opéra Garnier, one of the most stunning architectural masterpieces in Paris. Even if you’re not attending a performance, it’s worth visiting just to admire its grand staircase, gilded details, and painted ceilings by Chagall.
Stop 5: To close your 4 days in Paris, head toward the Seine River for a night cruise. There’s a cinematic magic in watching the Paris night lights flicker in the water as the boat glides under illuminated bridges, which feels like the perfect farewell.
Additional Travel Information for Your 4 Days in Paris
With 4 days in Paris, you’ll have the perfect balance between world-renowned landmarks, hidden neighborhood gems, and a touch of art, fashion, and French café culture. Whether you’re wandering through cobblestone streets in Montmartre or sipping champagne by the Seine at sunset, this itinerary gives you time to fall deeply in love with the City of Light, without rushing through it.
If you have extra time during your 4 days in Paris itinerary, consider exploring a few of these additional gems:
Art Lovers would love the Musée d’Orsay, home to a stunning collection of Impressionist masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, and Degas. Don’t miss Musée Rodin, a tranquil escape where art meets nature, the sculpture garden alone feels like stepping into a poem. For something regal yet free to visit, head to Petit Palais, the city’s small fine-arts museum with a golden entrance and a serene courtyard café that’s perfect for a quiet afternoon.
If You Want to Skip Versailles:
While Versailles is iconic, it can also be crowded. For a more peaceful (and equally romantic) experience, consider a day trip to the Loire Valley. Just a few hours from Paris by train, this region is sprinkled with fairy-tale châteaux, vineyards, and charming villages. It’s the perfect escape for wine tasting, castle-hopping, and countryside picnics.
If you’re visiting during the summer months and have extra time in France, consider heading south to soak up the sun along the Mediterranean coast. The beaches are beautiful and the water is crystal clear. You can explore more in my guide to the best things to do in Nice.
For wine lovers, Bordeaux is always a good idea. Its vineyards, châteaux, and rich culinary scene make it the perfect getaway. To plan your trip, take a look at our full Bordeaux guide.
Transportation Tips
Paris is incredibly walkable, and part of its magic lies in discovering small details, a hidden courtyard, a vintage bookstore, or a flower-lined balcony, as you stroll. Still, you’ll likely use the Métro, which connects every corner of the city quickly and efficiently. Ubers and taxis are reliable, but nothing compares to walking across the Seine at sunset or biking along the riverbanks with the wind in your hair.
Best Time to Visit Paris
The best time to spend 4 days in Paris is during the spring (April to June) or fall (September to early November). During these months, the weather is pleasant and the city is filled with local energy without feeling overcrowded. Winter brings a cozy charm: think cafés glowing with golden light, steaming chocolat chaud, and fewer tourists at popular sites.
Dining Tips
Paris is filled with charming cafés and bistros on every corner, but reservations are always a good idea, especially for dinner. If you want to experience something special, look for restaurants owned by Michelin-starred chefs that aren’t starred themselves. They offer the same culinary creativity without the formality or high prices.
Language
French is the official language, and while most people in Paris speak at least some English, locals appreciate it when visitors try simple French phrases, a “Bonjour” or “Merci beaucoup” goes a long way.
Travel Passes & City Cards
Consider purchasing the Paris Museum Pass or Navigo Découverte travel card to save time and money on museum entries and public transport. These passes are especially convenient if you plan to visit several attractions in a short time.
