14 DIY Lip Scrub Recipes for Soft and Hydrated Lips
Growing up on a small Caribbean island, I used natural everyday ingredients as beauty products. I learned it from my mother and grandmother, who have always had great skin. They taught me to care for my skin using simple natural ingredients and drinking lots of water.
From them, I also learned that to look refreshed and naturally beautiful, one essential part is to have healthy and hydrated lips. And how do we achieve that? By exfoliating!
There are many good lip exfoliants on the market today. Still, throughout the years, I have always leaned towards getting the raw ingredients and making homemade lip scrubs free of preservatives and unknown ingredients.
DIY lip scrubs allow you to create a product that will work better for your personal lip needs. Plus, you'll have more flexibility to change and switch between ingredients depending on how your lips react to them, the weather, and your exfoliating goals.
Our bodies are living organisms, and as such, they are constantly changing, something that, in my opinion, many pre-assembled beauty products fail to acknowledge. You might not need the same lip scrub every month or even every week. Creating your own allows you to fully control the product and make one that works perfectly for you!
DIY Lip Scrubs
Below, I'm listing some of the Best DIY Lip Scrubs! You can create all of them with easily accessible natural ingredients.
Ready to hydrate and brighten your lips?
How to make lip scrubs?
Scrubs and exfoliants are very simple to make. You'll need an exfoliant ingredient: brown sugar, coffee grounds, ground oats, or sea salt, which will be the center of your recipe.
You will mix that exfoliant with other ingredients that can also have exfoliant properties and will help regenerate and hydrate your lips. Yet, it's essential to know that in lip scrubs, like in life, no one scrub fits all; the best combination of ingredients depends on your wants and needs.
When Should I Exfoliate My Lips?
It depends on your lip care routine, needs, and skin type.
For example, I have oily skin, but my lips are more on the dry side, especially during the winter months. So while I exfoliate my face every other day, I exfoliate my lips only once a week, maximum twice.
Some people recommend doing it more often, especially if your lips are dry. Personally, I have learned throughout the years that my lips are also very sensitive, and they need time to recover and hydrate themselves after I exfoliate them.
Start with once a week and go from there. If you have sensitive lips that quickly get dry or chapped depending on the weather (low humidity, cold or high temperatures), your water intake, or your diet, these are some tips that work for me and might help you:
Always wash your hands before exfoliating. I recommend using your fingers instead of sponges and brushes. Sponges and brushes often lead to over-exfoliation.
Always wet your lips before applying your homemade scrubs.
To avoid irritation and allergic reactions, don't use harsh ingredients you've never tested before.
Don't exfoliate over sunburn, cracked or irritated lips.
Can I Use My Face Recipes To Make a Lip Scrub?
Many people often use one DIY recipe for both face and lips. I prefer to make different ones. For my lip scrubs, I generally use more gentle ingredients and smaller amounts that I customize for my lips.
Sometimes, I might use the same scrub ingredients for my face and lips, but the amounts vary. If you want to use one homemade scrub for both, you can. I recommend scrubbing your lips less than your face to avoid irritation or bad reactions in sensitive areas!
What To Do After Exfoliating Lips?
Exfoliating your lips will help remove dead skin cells, dryness, and flakes. It will contribute to better hydration and healthier lips. But exfoliating isn't the only necessary step in your lip care routine.
You'll need to hydrate and moisturize to achieve glowing, healthy lips after exfoliating. Coconut oil and honey are great a moisturizing and nourishing.
Applying a Lip Balm with SPF, even in the winter, is always a must!
The Best Homemade Lip Scrubs Recipes
These DIY Lip Scrubs are very easy to prepare. You only need the natural ingredients specified in each recipe, a small container, and a blender/grinder or food processor.
DIY Sugar Lip Scrub Good at Removing Dead Skin
This DIY sugar lip scrub is a bit of a family heirloom. I first learned it from my grandma, and it has been one of my go-to options for years. It's great at removing dead cells, moisturizing, and improving your lip health!
Tip: Change the proportions to use it for the face and body.
You can make it one of two ways: the 1st one is quick and simple but equally effective, mixing the brown sugar with oil (I prefer Argan oil or coconut, but any other oil would work well); the 2nd is a bit fancier, thicker, and smells delicious. Combine the sugar and the oil with honey and some tiny drops of essential oils. I love using peppermint for a refreshing and clean feel for my lips.
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Raw honey
2 teaspoons of argan and coconut oil
2 to 3 drops of essential oils (peppermint, lavender, rose, jasmine, etc.)
Mix all these wholesome ingredients well. Once evenly combined, use your fingertips and apply this sugar scrub to your lips and around your mouth. Use small circular motions in both directions and exfoliate to remove all dead and dry skin from your lips. Rinse with slightly warm water and let your lips air dry.
Once you rinse off, if there's any residual honey, let it sit on your lips and act as a moisturizer. Otherwise, apply a lip balm a few minutes later.
Natural Lip Scrub with Vitamin C & Aloe Vera for the Summer Months
This Vitamin C and Aloe Vera scrub is perfect for exfoliating dry lips while providing essential nutrients for skin health. It will remove impurities and dead cells while revitalizing and brightening dull lips. I often use this scrub in the summer when my lips feel uneven or hyperpigmented.
1½ tablespoon of vitamin C powder (you can use crushed tablets)
½ tablespoon Aloe Vera
2 drops Citrus essential oil (optional)
Combine the vitamin C powder with the aloe vera gel in a clear bowl. Add a few drops of citrus essential oil. Mix the ingredients well until you get your desired consistency.
Ground Oats And Coconut Oil Lip Scrub For Dry And Chapped Lips
This oat, honey, and coconut scrub is a gentler DIY Lip Scrub perfect for those trying homemade lip scrubs for the first time. Oats are a very gentle ingredient to use on DIY skin and lip treatments. This is a great place to start!
Oats are known for their ability to soothe, calm, and moisturize the skin. They have anti-inflammatory properties, and beta-glucans, one of the oats' natural compounds, offer relief from redness while alleviating itching and rashes.
2 tablespoons of old-fashioned oats (uncooked)
½ teaspoon Raw honey
½ tablespoon of Virgin Coconut oil
Take your blender or food processor, add the oats, and blend them until finely ground. Combine the ground oats with the coconut oil and honey until it forms a paste. Gently massage the lip scrub paste in circular motions onto your lips and around your mouth, rinse thoroughly, and apply a natural moisturizer afterward. I like to use a bit of the same virgin coconut oil.
Argan oil and Sea Salt Lip Scrub To Awaken your Lips
This lip scrub recipe is perfect to use in the mornings. It will help awaken and nourish your lips. It is simple yet effective!
2 tablespoons Sea Salt
½ tablespoon Argan oil
Honey
Add the sea salt, argan oil, and honey in a small bowl. Mix the ingredients well. Add a few drops of essential oil (rose or eucalyptus work great!). Wet your lips with warm water before applying and rinse them after exfoliating.
Cocoa Butter and coffee grounds Lip Scrub
Another easy recipe to make at home is this cocoa and coffee scrub. Your main exfoliant ingredient will be the coffee grounds from your last brew. The antioxidant properties of the coffee and the caffeine will stimulate blood circulation and promote a plumper lip appearance.
The cocoa butter will moisturize and soothe any dry or chapped lips.
2 tablespoons Coffee Grounds
Cocoa Butter ( Coconut Oil alternatively)
½ teaspoon of Raw Honey (optional)
Mix the recycled coffee grounds from your brew and the softened cocoa butter well in a small container, add the honey, and stir until it becomes a homogeneous paste.
Wet your lip before applying the mix, and rub the scrub in circular motions for about two minutes. Rinse your lips and re-apply softened cocoa butter(this time by itself to leave your lips feeling smooth) once you have finished the exfoliant process.
Ground rice, Honey, And Avocado Lip Scrub To Hydrate Dry Lips
This DIY lip scrub adds extra hydration while exfoliating and removing dead skin. Its primary focuses are plumping, moisturizing, and protecting lips. It is perfect for dry skin, as it exfoliates and adds tons of glow to brighten up that tricky, dull skin.
2 tablespoons ground rice
½ tablespoon of Olive Oil
Half Avocado
First, mash the avocado, then add the ground rice and the olive oil. Mix all the ingredients well and apply this homemade lip scrub before jumping in the shower. Massage gently before rinsing off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Lips will end up feeling clean, smooth, and moisturized.
Almond Grounds and Almond Milk Lip Scrub
This is another great recipe that uses mostly almond-derived ingredients. Almond products have numerous benefits for lips, skin, and hair. They can help heal cracked and dried lips and reduce sun damage.
Note: You don't necessarily have to use almond milk. If all you have at hand is regular milk, you'll still get excellent results! The lactic acid of cow milk is a great gentle exfoliant!
2 tablespoons almond grounds
½ teaspoon of Almond milk
1 tablespoon of virgin vegetable Jojoba oil (almond, olive, and argan are also great alternatives)
Combine the almond milk with the almond grounds and the almond oil and gently rub the mix on your lips. My mom loves this combination as it works wonders on her sensitive lips and mouth area, and its ingredients help to prevent signs of aging.
Strawberry & Mint Leaves Lip Scrub
This homemade scrub is an excellent option if you are looking to exfoliate and rejuvenate your lips. Ingredients like strawberries and mint will help remove dead cells from your lips while brightening and nourishing them. The final result: soft and smooth lips!
2 ripe strawberries (no stems)
3 small mint leaves
2 teaspoons of Coconut Oil
1 teaspoon of organic white or cane sugar
First, wash the strawberries and mint leaves. Blend them with the coconut oil. Combine the mixture in a small clear bowl with the organic white sugar. Mix it all thoroughly until you get a paste-type consistency.
Take the finished scrub and place it in a glass jar. Store in the fridge and apply when needed on your wet lips.
Often, during the summer, I feel that my lips get over-pigmented. While lips are less likely to get sunburn or develop sunspots, UV radiation can still easily affect them.
Besides using a lip balm with higher SPF during these months, turmeric, ginger, and yogurt are a few ingredients I love to integrate into my lip scrub routine. They are highly effective if you are looking to brighten and even out your lip tone.
Ground rice, Honey & Ginger Lip Scrub
A ground rice and ginger DIY Scrub will nourish and revitalize your lips, leaving them soft and supple. The ground rice is a mild exfoliator, perfect for sensitive lips. The honey works as a natural humectant, and the ginger stimulates circulation. Combining the three will help revitalize your lip skin and work together to help reduce dryness and redness.
1/4 cup Ground Rice
1 tablespoon of Ginger powder
2 tablespoons of honey
To grind rice, take 1/4 cup and pour it into a coffee grinder, blender, or food processor. Grind until you get a fine powder. Next, mix the rice powder with the ginger powder until evenly distributed. Add the honey and continue mixing until you get a cohesive lip scrub. Wet your lips, apply the scrub, and massage in circular motions for about two minutes.
Natural Turmeric Lip Scrub with Yogurt & White Tea leaves
This white tea, yogurt, and turmeric DIY lip scrub is designed to naturally exfoliate and illuminate your lips. Turmeric gives lips a healthy glow, white tea leaves work as a gentle exfoliator, and yogurt is rich in lactic acid, which promotes plumper and even lips.
1 tablespoon ground turmeric
2 tablespoons finely ground tea leaves
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoons plain yogurt
Grind the white tea leaves until you get powder. Place the ground turmeric and the tea leaves powder into a mixing bowl. Add one tablespoon of honey and one of plain yogurt. Mix all the ingredients until you get a smooth paste. The consistency should be spreadable and on the thick side. Add more yogurt if needed.
Sunflower Seeds & Pineapple DIY Lip Scrub
A Sunflower Seeds & Pineapple DIY Lip Scrub will enhance lip texture and maintain lip health. Ground Sunflower seeds will help remove dead skin cells, unclogging the pores around the lips. Sunflower seeds contain antioxidants, such as vitamin E, which help brighten your lips and maintain a youthful lip appearance.
⅓ cup Ground Sunflower seeds
Pineapple chunks
Honey
To prepare the sunflower seeds, take ⅓ cup and pulse them in a food processor until finely ground. Next, cut the pineapple into pieces before blending it with the ground sunflower seeds until smooth. Add honey before applying it to your lips.
Coconut Oil, white sugar & cucumber lip scrub
This cucumber and white sugar scrub is another of my favorite recipes for the summer months because of its refreshing and cooling effects. The mix with the coconut oil will help exfoliate your lips while hydrating them and reducing puffiness.
⅓ Cucumber
1 tablespoon of white sugar (coconut sugar is a great alternative)
Coconut Oil
Peel the cleaned cucumber and cut into pieces before putting it in the blender. Add the coconut oil and the white sugar and blend everything until thoroughly combined. Blend more if you prefer a smoother scrub.
Black tea leaves, Egg White & Honey Homemade Scrub
This is a great recipe to remove dark spots, improve blemishes, and treat stubborn hyperpigmentation marks. Black tea contains antioxidants that revitalize and leave your skin glowing. The antibacterial properties of the honey, along with the mix of egg whites and baking soda, will help firm and tighten the skin.
½ cup Black Tea leaves
1 Egg white
Honey
First, grind the black tea leaves until you get a powder. Then, in a small bowl, combine the black tea leaf powder and the raw pasteurized egg white. Whisk it all together; the consistency should be smooth. To finish off the scrub, you can add a touch of honey.

1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
½ Tablespoon coconut sugar
Honey
Add the baking soda, coconut sugar, and honey in a clear bowl, whisk it all, and mix well until you get a thick lip Scrub. Apply the DIY scrub to your lips with your fingertips, and scrub your lips well for about 2 minutes. Rise off.
