Getting There & Getting Around

The easiest way to get to Crested Butte is to fly into Gunnison–Crested Butte Regional Airport, about 30 minutes away. From there, renting a car is the most convenient option, especially if you plan to explore nearby trails and lakes or take day trips.

We flew into Denver and drove four to five hours through scenic mountain routes. While longer, it’s a beautiful road trip.

Once in town, you may not need your car as much as you think. Crested Butte is extremely walkable, and there’s a free shuttle connecting downtown with Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the surrounding areas.

Best Time to Visit

Crested Butte is a year-round destination. Regardless of when you choose to visit, you’ll have a great time. Of course, the experience varies depending on the season, month, and weather.

Summer, from June through August, is ideal for hiking, biking, exploring farmers’ markets, and eating outdoors. If you are planning to visit to see the wildflowers, they are typically in full bloom in July.

Fall is perfect for seeing the golden aspen foliage and taking scenic drives through the surrounding mountains.
