The historic heart of Panama City, Casco Viejo, is the colonial center of Panama and one of the go-to areas for tourists to stay or spend time. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this neighborhood is also one of the most popular places to stay in Panama City, especially for first-time visitors. Yet the neighborhood doesn’t feel overly touristy. You can still experience the local culture, connect with the Panamanians, and easily integrate into the day-to-day life of Panama. 

There are plenty of things to do in Casco Viejo, from strolling through its streets to wandering through courtyards, stopping for brunch, sipping cocktails with skyline views, joining a guided tour, or browsing the markets and shops.

In the evenings, make your way to Plaza Bolívar or Plaza de la Independencia, find a bench, and people-watch all while admiring the historic buildings and churches that surround them. As the night approaches, Casco Viejo transforms, music drifts from rooftop bars, the plazas fill with Panamanians, vendors set up food carts, and the streets light up with a lively Latin energy.

Before visiting Panama, if you had mentioned the Panama Canal to me, I probably would have imagined it as something more suited for engineering geeks or maybe just men. But to my surprise, it became one of my absolute favorite experiences in Panama City. We spent a morning at the Miraflores Locks, watching enormous ships pass through and learning how the entire system works: no motors involved, just gravity and water levels shifting to carry vessels from one side to the other.

Afterward, we stopped by the IMAX Theater to watch the 3D film on the history of the canal, which ended up being one of the highlights of my trip. Even if you think it won’t be your kind of activity, trust me, you’ll be blown away by the scale, history, and genius behind this modern wonder.

Explore the Cinta Costera on Foot or by Bike

The Cinta Costera is one of the most popular spots in Panama City. It’s a waterfront promenade where people go to run, walk, or bike along the water while taking in the stunning views of Panama city skyline and the ocean.

We visited in May, but no matter the season, the heat in Panama City is real. That’s why I recommend renting a bike instead of walking. You’ll catch a refreshing breeze as you pedal along, making the experience much more enjoyable.

If you can, time your ride for sunset. Watching the city light up as the sky turns golden is the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring. Try Fresh Seafood at Mercado de Mariscos

When it comes to food and nightlife, one of the best things to do in Panama City, Panama, is to sample the local seafood at the famous Mercado de Mariscos. Panama City’s food scene is surprisingly diverse. Although I expected it to be heavily influenced by Latin and regional cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a wide range of international and wellness-focused options. 

Breakfast for us often included delicious yogurt and fruit bowls, flaky pastries, and fresh juice combinations that went beyond the usual tropical flavors.

Still, nothing compared to our favorite food experience at Mercado de Mariscos (the biggest local fish market). We grabbed a table at one of the adjacent restaurants and indulged in fried fish fillets and crispy shrimp, both absolutely delicious.

While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ceviche or plantains (I’ll happily leave the ceviche to the Peruvians and the plantains to my mom), any fried seafood served with fries on the side is a must-try here. The market atmosphere is lively, a little chaotic, and truly authentic making it an experience worth adding to your list

Panamanian Geisha Coffee Tasting

Although coffee isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about what to do in Panama City, Panama, it absolutely should be. Panama is home to one of the most expensive and celebrated coffee varieties in the world: Panamanian Geisha coffee. If you’re planning to do any tastings or cooking ralted classes or workshops a Geisha coffee tasting is an unforgettable experience and a chance to learn about a different side of the country beyond the usual Panama City attractions.

You'll learn that the highlands of Panama, especially in Boquete, are known for their world-class coffee farms where Geisha beans are carefully cultivated. Every year, local plantations compete in auctions where Geisha coffee is sold at record-breaking prices to roasters around the globe. 

It’s not just a cup of coffee, it’s part of Panama’s cultural identity and an incredible experience in Panama City if you’re a coffee lover. It’s also one of those rare Panama City attractions that combines culture, flavor, and storytelling in a single cup.

Geisha beans are not only very expensive but also quite delicate. Experts recommend always using filtered water when brewing to preserve their subtle flavor and sticking to gentle methods like pour-over or drip, since darker roasting techniques, such as those used for espresso, can easily overpower their taste. Enjoy your cup of coffee like the locals do, black, with no sugar, milk, or cream, to fully appreciate its floral, tea-like profile.

Rooftops and Bar Hopping

As a born and raised Cuban, of course my favorite liquor is rum, how could it not be? Panama’s unique culture, combined with its closeness and ties to Cuba, made it the perfect place to indulge, and I didn’t hold back. 

I ordered rum cocktails at the Pedro Mandinga Rum Bar and nearly every other rooftop bar we visited, and the Panamanian cocktails did not disappoint. Their mojitos were top-notch, especially when made with a local rum or Havana Club rum, which instantly gave me those home vibes.

One of the best things to do in Panama City, Panama, is rooftop hopping, and it became one of my favorite experiences. Watching the city skyline during golden sunset or a glittering night is the kind of Panama City experience that doesn’t require a tour guide, just good company and a well-made cocktail.

Of course, rum wasn’t my only drink of choice. When we wanted something more laid back, we turned to natural wines at Olivo Wine Bar in the hipster neighborhood of El Cangrejo. For those staying in Casco Viejo, the Bar at La Compañía Hotel, one of the best hotels in Panama City, has one of the most diverse cocktail menus in the city. Their seasonal creations are a delight, and you can’t go wrong with a refreshing Tinto de Verano to cool off between exploring Panama City attractions.

Go to a small Chocolate Factory

One of our favorite things to do in Panama City, Panama, was visiting a small independent chocolate factory with headquarters in Casco Viejo. 

As a lifelong chocolate lover, I found it fascinating to learn about the process, from the cacao bean to the final chocolate bar. During the tour, the hosts explain how chocolate is made, the right ingredients to use in quality chocolate, and let's you participate in part of the process. 

We also learned how to tell the difference between a good chocolate bar that’s worth the price versus one that’s all marketing. Not only did we taste incredible chocolate bar samples, but I also came away with a new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind chocolate-making.

Panama Viejo (Old Panama Ruins)

If you’re wondering what to do in Panama City, Panama Viejo is a must. These ruins are the remains of the original Panama City. It’s one of the most iconic Panama City attractions, offering both outdoor exploration and a small museum where you can see interesting artefacts and learn about the city’s early history. 

Museums

For cultural experiences, Panama City has plenty of museums and galleries worth visiting. Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is one of the better-known museums. It celebrates Panama’s extraordinary biodiversity and its role as a land bridge connecting two big stretches of land.

If you’re staying in Casco Viejo, Panama City, the Panama Canal Museum is another fascinating stop. The museum overlooks Plaza de la Independencia and tells the story of the Panama Canal’s construction, political history, and global importance. We chose this one over the Biomuseo since it was walking distance from our hotel and gave us a deeper appreciation of Panama’s most famous landmark.

San Blas Islands

When the city heat becomes too much, escape to the San Blas Islands, with some of the most beautiful beaches in Panama City. 

The San Blas Islands, also called Guna Yala, are a breathtaking archipelago off Panama’s Caribbean coast. With turquoise waters, palm-fringed beaches, and the rich culture of the Guna Yala people, San Blas feels like a completely different world and a true tropical paradise to explore. 

You can book a catamaran trip, spend the day swimming in crystal-clear water, or simply relax beachside with a mojito in hand. It's truly the ultimate way to balance city exploration with beach bliss.

Monkey Island & Gatun Lake Tour

If you decide to visit the Panama Canal and watch the IMAX movie, heading to Gatun Lake a day or two later completes the canal experience. The lake is a crucial part of the canal route, something you’ll learn about at the Miraflores docks, and taking a tour there really puts two and two together. You’ll get to experience in person everything you saw in the movie.

Lake tours often include a stop at Monkey Island, where you can watch small monkeys jump between trees and even interact safely with visitors. The guides explain how to feed and observe them responsibly in their natural habitat. Don’tworry, these little monkeys are curious but not overly mischievous, so you won’t have to worry about losing your purse or your hat! We spent hours in Gamboa hiking its trails, gliding above the canopy on the tram, and marveling at the wildlife. Of all the places we visited outside Panama City, El Valle de Antón was our favorite, even though it is the farthest, at about two and a half hours away. The valley is lush, green, and incredibly biodiverse.

We rented a car, took the scenic mountain route, and stopped at a roadside restaurant and plant shop to enjoy grilled chicken. Once in the valley, you can hike to waterfalls, go horseback riding, browse local markets, or simply slow down after busy days in the city. It is the perfect way to experience Panama’s rural beauty and culture.

The official language of Panama is Spanish. In Panama City, you’ll find that many people in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas speak English reasonably well. Transportation Tips

Getting around Panama City is relatively easy and convenient. If you’re flying in, Tocumen International Airport is the main hub, located about 30-40 minutes from the city center. From there, you can take a taxi, Uber, or shuttle, or even rent a car if you plan to do day trips near Panama City.

Within the city, walking is often the best way to explore Casco Viejo Panama City, its vibrant streets, plazas, and Panama City attractions. The metro is reliable and inexpensive, and Uber and taxis are widely available.
