Yet the neighborhood doesn’t feel overly touristy. You can still experience the local culture, connect with the Panamanians, and easily integrate into the day-to-day life of Panama.
There are plenty of things to do in Casco Viejo, from strolling through its streets to wandering through courtyards, stopping for brunch, sipping cocktails with skyline views, joining a guided tour, or browsing the markets and shops.
In the evenings, make your way to Plaza Bolívar or Plaza de la Independencia, find a bench, and people-watch all while admiring the historic buildings and churches that surround them. As the night approaches, Casco Viejo transforms, music drifts from rooftop bars, the plazas fill with Panamanians, vendors set up food carts, and the streets light up with a lively Latin energy.

Before visiting Panama, if you had mentioned the Panama Canal to me, I probably would have imagined it as something more suited for engineering geeks or maybe just men. But to my surprise, it became one of my absolute favorite experiences in Panama City. We spent a morning at the Miraflores Locks, watching enormous ships pass through and learning how the entire system works: no motors involved, just gravity and water levels shifting to carry vessels from one side to the other.
Afterward, we stopped by the IMAX Theater to watch the 3D film on the history of the canal, which ended up being one of the highlights of my trip. Panama City’s food scene is surprisingly diverse. Although I expected it to be heavily influenced by Latin and regional cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a wide range of international and wellness-focused options.
Breakfast for us often included delicious yogurt and fruit bowls, flaky pastries, and fresh juice combinations that went beyond the usual tropical flavors.
Still, nothing compared to our favorite food experience at Mercado de Mariscos (the biggest local fish market). We grabbed a table at one of the adjacent restaurants and indulged in fried fish fillets and crispy shrimp, both absolutely delicious.
While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ceviche or plantains (I’ll happily leave the ceviche to the Peruvians and the plantains to my mom), any fried seafood served with fries on the side is a must-try here. The market atmosphere is lively, a little chaotic, and truly authentic making it an experience worth adding to your list

Although coffee isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about what to do in Panama City Panama, it absolutely should be. Panama is home to one of the most expensive and celebrated coffee varieties in the world: Panamanian Geisha coffee. I ordered rum cocktails at the Pedro Mandinga Rum Bar and nearly every other rooftop bar we visited, and the Panamanian cocktails did not disappoint. Their mojitos were top-notch, especially when made with a local rum or Havana Club rum, which instantly gave me those home vibes.
One of the best things to do in Panama City, Panama, is rooftop hopping, and it became one of my favorite experiences. Watching the city skyline during golden sunset or a glittering night is the kind of Panama City experience that doesn’t require a tour guide, just good company and a well-made cocktail.

Of course, rum wasn’t my only drink of choice. When we wanted something more laid back, we turned to natural wines at Olivo Wine Bar in the hipster neighborhood of El Cangrejo. For those staying in Casco Viejo, the Bar at La Compañía Hotel, one of the best hotels in Panama City, has one of the most diverse cocktail menus in the city. Their seasonal creations are a delight, and you can’t go wrong with a refreshing Tinto de Verano to cool off between exploring Panama City attractions.

One of our favorite things to do in Panama City Panama, was visiting a small independent chocolate factory with headquarters in Casco Viejo.
As a lifelong chocolate lover, I found it fascinating to learn about the process, from the cacao bean to the final chocolate bar. During the tour, the hosts explain how chocolate is made, the right ingredients to use in quality chocolate, and let's you participate in part of the process.
We also learned how to tell the difference between a good chocolate bar that’s worth the price versus one that’s all marketing. Not only did we taste incredible chocolate bar samples, but I also came away with a new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind chocolate-making.

Once in the valley, you can hike to waterfalls, go horseback riding, browse local markets, or simply slow down after busy days in the city.
